History
Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) was founded in 1966 by John Bowers and Roy Wilkins in Worthing, West Sussex, England. Initially, the company started as a small electronics store selling televisions and radios, but soon Bowers began focusing on creating high-end loudspeakers. B&W’s first product, the P1 speaker, was handcrafted, setting the company’s ethos for precision engineering and attention to detail.
The company quickly became a recognized leader in the high-fidelity audio industry, particularly due to its innovations in loudspeaker technology. One of its groundbreaking products, the B&W 801 speaker, became a standard in many recording studios, including Abbey Road. Over the decades, Bowers & Wilkins expanded its product range to include home audio systems, headphones, and car audio systems, maintaining its reputation for superior sound quality and innovation.
In 2020, Bowers & Wilkins was acquired by Sound United LLC, the parent company of several other audio brands such as Denon, Marantz, and Polk Audio. Despite the acquisition, B&W continues to operate with its core principles of craftsmanship and engineering excellence.
